Breaking Ground on Horseback: Atlanta’s BEST Academy Polo Team Makes Historic Debut

By The ATL Now Staff

In a moment that fused tradition with transformation, Atlanta’s BEST Academy Polo Team—the first all-Black high school polo team in the nation—made its competitive debut this weekend at the 8th Annual Atlanta Polo Party, held during the 2025 Soul Symphony Weekend.

Facing off against the seasoned Starr Creek Polo Club, the young athletes from BEST Academy didn’t just play a match—they made history.

🐎 A New Chapter in an Old Sport

Polo, often associated with elite country clubs and generational wealth, has long been seen as inaccessible to communities of color. But the students of BEST Academy are rewriting that narrative—one chukker at a time.

With grit, grace, and game-day focus, the team took to the field, showcasing months of training, horsemanship, and strategic play. Their presence alone was a statement: that excellence knows no boundaries, and that representation matters in every arena.

🎓 From Classroom to Clubhouse

The formation of the team was no small feat. It required vision, resources, and a belief in what’s possible. Through partnerships with local equestrian programs and support from community leaders, the students of BEST Academy were given the opportunity to learn the sport, care for horses, and compete at a high level.

“This isn’t just about polo,” said one coach. “It’s about expanding horizons, building confidence, and showing these young men that they belong anywhere they choose to go.”

🎉 Soul Symphony Weekend: A Stage for Impact

The match took place during the Soul Symphony Weekend—a celebration of Black excellence, culture, and creativity in Atlanta. The Polo Party, now in its eighth year, served as the perfect stage for this groundbreaking debut, drawing spectators from across the region and shining a spotlight on the intersection of sport and social progress.

🌟 More Than a Game

While the scoreboard told one story, the real victory was in the visibility. The BEST Academy Polo Team’s debut marks a turning point—not just for the school, but for the sport itself. It challenges assumptions, opens doors, and inspires a new generation to pursue the unexpected.

As Atlanta continues to lead in innovation, equity, and youth empowerment, this team stands as a symbol of what happens when opportunity meets determination.
